FACE IT: CARICATURE AND THE BRAIN

Why does caricature work and what makes likeness so elusive to capture? This interactive series will explore the brain science behind caricature. Through creative, physiological, and neurological lenses, discussions will range from the use of caricature in bio-facial composites for forensic criminal identification to political caricature, the science of attractiveness, optical illusions, and more. Attendees will engage in live psychological experiments and might just walk away with a new way of seeing themselves.

Jacob Shaw is an American psycholinguist and artist based in Chicago. Drawing on his training in brain science and lifelong love of caricature, his research explores the cognitive and perceptual underpinnings of visual exaggeration. He has lectured on caricature theory in a range of settings, including university courses and lifelong learning programs, to fellow artists and non-artists alike.
